Scuba Corps Requests Help At Junior Wheelchair Camp

July 26, 2011

The Tiwahe Lodge SCUBA Corps and Dive California are looking for volunteers to help with the San Diego Junior Wheelchair Sports Camp on August 11th-12th. This is the country's largest and most recognized sports camp for children with permanent physical disabilities. We will be offering Snorkeling and Discover Scuba in one of the big pools of the Southwestern College in Chula Vista.

The San Diego Junior Wheelchair Camp runs from August 9-13th. The one-week summer camp involves nearly 60 children, ages 4 to 18, with various disabilities including spinal cord injuries, amputation, spina bifida, cerebral palsy and muscular dystrophy. Part of the annual camp will be held at North Crown Point Shores in the San Diego Mission Bay Area, and part will be held at the Southwestern College in Chula Vista. Camp sports will include sailing, outrigger canoeing, water-skiing, basketball, tennis, archery, rubgy, yoga, boccia ball, hip hop dance, soccer, obstacle course, hand-cycling, snorkeling and SCUBA. They also offer a class in wheelchair maintenance.

This camp is organized by the San Diego Adaptive Sport Foundation (SDASF), a private, non-profit corporation established for the express purpose of providing sports and recreational programs to children and adults with disabilities. In addition to this camp, the SDASF also runs a wide range of year-round sports programs for youth and adults with disabilities as well as the Injured Service Members Program for men an women using sports to recover from service-connected disabilities.

For more information on SDASF, please visit

Tim Wagner and the Driscolls will be helping out, and if you could also assist, it would be greatly appreciated and would count as service hours to the lodge. Contact Dive California, 619-222-0060 if you can help.

Thanks for your support! This is a great opportunity to get some public recognition for the Tiwahe Lodge volunteering at a worthwhile event.

Mr. Hadley
Adviser, Tiwahe Scuba Corps
